Education

To work as a fast food cook, you need:
  • On-the-job training;
  • Little or no previous work experience; and
  • The ability to work as part of a team.
  • Fast food cook jobs tend to be entry-level jobs that require little or no previous work experience. However, many employers prefer that you have a high school diploma or GED. It is helpful if you have experience working in a fast food restaurant or cooking for others.

    Hours

  • May work early mornings, late evenings, holidays, weekends, or days.
  • May work part time or full time. Most work about 40 hours.
  • FAST FOOD COOKS will:
  • Prepare a limited selection of food items.
  • Do very fast-paced work.
  • Usually wear uniforms.
  • FAST FOOD COOKS frequently:
  • Stand at fryers and grills for long periods of time.
  • Walk or run in the kitchen to retrieve supplies for long periods of time.
  • Repeat movements over and over.
  • Use hands to handle, control, or feel objects, tools, or controls.
  • Bend or twist their body.
  • It is important that FAST FOOD COOKS be able to:
  • Understand the speech of another person.
  • Use stomach and lower back muscles to support the body for long periods without getting tired.
  • Use one or two hands to grasp, move, or assemble objects
