Education

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Informal & On-the-job Training from an Experienced Worker
  • Hours

  • May work full time or part time, but most work 40 hours a week.
  • May work evenings, weekends, or holidays.
  • VETERINARY ASSISTANTS will:
  • Assist veterinarians in clinics and research labs
  • Perform basic procedures, such as drawing blood or running tests
  • Deal with animal owners as much as they deal with animals
  • Often wear safety gear, such as masks and gloves
  • VETERINARY ASSISTANTS frequently:
  • Stand while assisting in surgery or with exams.
  • Use hands to handle, control, or feel objects, tools, or controls.
  • Walk or run while exercising animals.
  • Bend or twist their body.
  • Kneel, stoop, crouch, or crawl.
  • Repeat the same movements.
  • It is important that VETERINARY ASSISTANTS be able to:
  • See details of objects that are less than a few feet away.
  • Speak clearly so listeners can understand.
  • Understand the speech of another person.
  • Use one or two hands to grasp, move, or assemble objects.
  • Bend, stretch, twist, or reach out.
  • Use muscles to lift, push, pull, or carry heavy objects.
