Education

  • High School Diploma or GED;
  • Complete a college program or apprenticeship in mortuary science
  • Hours

  • May work business hours, along with odd hours when a death occurs.
  • Most work 40 hours per week or more. The nature of the funeral business is unpredictable and there may be slow and busy times.
  • May work on an on-call basis.
  • May work evenings and weekends.
  • FUNERAL DIRECTORS will:
  • Organize and direct funeral services
  • May perform many tasks, from embalming to accounting
  • Deal with customers during a difficult time
  • Train for usually three years
  • May need to take continuing education courses

  • Sit for long periods of time.
  • Stand during services.
