Education

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Hours

  • Generally work about 40 hours per week. Forest fire fighters may work more than 50 hours a week if the fire season is particularly busy.
  • Work days, nights, weekends, and holidays. City fire fighters usually have a set schedule, whereas forest fire fighters' schedules are subject to weather and fire conditions.
  • Spend much of their time at fire stations, which are like dorms. They must be prepared to respond immediately to an emergency.

  • Use water, chemicals, and tools to put out fires
  • Work in teams
  • Work days, nights, weekends, and holidays
  • FIRE FIGHTERS frequently:
  • Stand, walk, and run for long periods of time while fighting fires.
  • Use hands to handle, control, or feel objects, tools, or controls.
  • Keep or regain balance.
  • It is important that FIRE FIGHTERS be able to:
  • Use muscles to lift, push, pull, or carry heavy objects.
  • Speak clearly so listeners can understand.
  • Be physically active for long periods without getting tired or out of breath.
  • Use stomach & lower back muscles to support the body for long periods without tiring.
