Have a high school diploma or GED

Complete on-the-job training or formal training program

Most work Monday through Friday, 40 hours per week.

Those who work in retail stores may work evenings and weekends.

May work part time or full time.

Opticians will:

Fit and sell glasses, contact lenses, and frames

Work directly with customers

Opticians frequently :

Use their hands to handle, control, or feel objects, tools, or controls.

Stand for long periods of time.

It is important that Opticians be able to:

See details of objects that are less than a few feet away.

Use fingers to grasp, move, or assemble very small objects.

Hold the arm and hand in one position or hold the hand steady while moving the arm.

Speak clearly so listeners can understand.

Understand the speech of another person.
