have a high school diploma or GED;
complete at least a bachelor's degree in geology or geophysics;
have excellent oral and written communication skills
Usually work 40 hours per week. May work longer hours while working in the field.
May travel to visit clients or to sites to collect information. Some sites are remote.
GEOLOGISTS AND GEOPHYSICISTS will:
study how rocks were formed and how they have changed since they were created
study the evolution of life by studying plant and animal fossils.
study not only the earth's surface, but also its interior and forces that affect the earth, such as magnetism and gravity
GEOLOGISTS AND GEOPHYSICISTS frequently:
prepare maps, charts, and diagrams to help explain their results.
use machines to measure physical aspects of the earth, such as temperature and earthquake activity
It is important that GEOLOGISTS AND GEOPHYSICISTS be able to:
be exact in their work and be sure all details are done. Errors could cause clients to lose money if geoscientists make the wrong recommendations
Work in a moderately competitive atmosphere where weekly and monthly deadlines must be met
