Education

  • have a high school diploma or GED;
  • complete at least a bachelor's degree in geology or geophysics;
  • have excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Hours

  • Usually work 40 hours per week. May work longer hours while working in the field.
  • May travel to visit clients or to sites to collect information. Some sites are remote.
  • GEOLOGISTS AND GEOPHYSICISTS will:
  • study how rocks were formed and how they have changed since they were created
  • study the evolution of life by studying plant and animal fossils.
  • study not only the earth's surface, but also its interior and forces that affect the earth, such as magnetism and gravity
  • GEOLOGISTS AND GEOPHYSICISTS frequently:
  • prepare maps, charts, and diagrams to help explain their results.
  • use machines to measure physical aspects of the earth, such as temperature and earthquake activity
  • It is important that GEOLOGISTS AND GEOPHYSICISTS be able to:
  • be exact in their work and be sure all details are done. Errors could cause clients to lose money if geoscientists make the wrong recommendations
