To work as a bus, truck, and diesel mechanic, you must:
be at least 18 years old;
have a high school diploma or GED;
have a commercial driver's license to test drive trucks;
complete a formal training program; and
complete an Associate’s Degree in Diesel Mechanics or on the job training
May work 40-hour work weeks. Some work as many as 70 hours per week, especially those who are self-employed.
May work evenings, nights, and weekends. Some shops have longer hours to meet customer demand.
BUS, TRUCK AND DIESEL MECHANICS will:
Repair and maintain diesel engines in a variety of vehicles
May work overtime, nights, and weekends
Usually work alone
BUS, TRUCK AND DIESEL MECHANICS frequently:
Use hands to handle, control, or feel objects, tools, or controls.
Stand for long periods of time.
Kneel, stoop, crouch, or crawl.
It is important that BUS, TRUCK AND DIESEL MECHANICS be able to:
Hear sounds and recognize the difference between them.
Make quick, precise adjustments to machine controls.
Use fingers to grasp, move, or assemble very small objects.
