Education

To work as a bus, truck, and diesel mechanic, you must:
  • be at least 18 years old;
  • have a high school diploma or GED;
  • have a commercial driver's license to test drive trucks;
  • complete a formal training program; and
  • complete an Associate’s Degree in Diesel Mechanics or on the job training
  • Hours

  • May work 40-hour work weeks. Some work as many as 70 hours per week, especially those who are self-employed.
  • May work evenings, nights, and weekends. Some shops have longer hours to meet customer demand.
  • BUS, TRUCK AND DIESEL MECHANICS will:
  • Repair and maintain diesel engines in a variety of vehicles
  • May work overtime, nights, and weekends
  • Usually work alone
  • BUS, TRUCK AND DIESEL MECHANICS frequently:
  • Use hands to handle, control, or feel objects, tools, or controls.
  • Stand for long periods of time.
  • Kneel, stoop, crouch, or crawl.
  • It is important that BUS, TRUCK AND DIESEL MECHANICS be able to:
  • Hear sounds and recognize the difference between them.
  • Make quick, precise adjustments to machine controls.
  • Use fingers to grasp, move, or assemble very small objects.
