Education

To work as a freight handler, you need:
  • excellent physical health and stamina;
  • on-the-job training; and
  • little or no experience.
  • Hours

  • May work part time or full time. Those who work full time may work long hours to meet shipping deadlines.
  • May work evening, weekend, or night shifts. Schedules are usually established.
  • FREIGHT HANDLERS will:
  • Load, unload, and stack a wide variety of materials
  • Use dollies, hand trucks, wheelbarrows, hoists, cranes, and pumps
  • Have a low level of social interaction
  • Sometimes wear safety gear
  • FREIGHT HANDLERS frequently:
  • Stand and walk for long periods of time. May occasionally run.
  • Use hands to handle, control, or feel objects, tools, or controls.
  • Repeat the same movements.
  • Bend, twist, kneel, stoop, crouch, and crawl to load and unload freight and handle materials
  • It is important that FREIGHT HANDLERS be able to:
  • Use muscles to lift, push, pull, or carry heavy objects.
  • Use stomach and lower back muscles to support the body for long periods without getting tired.
  • Bend, stretch, twist, or reach out quickly and repeatedly with the body, arms, or legs.
  • Use hands and fingers to grasp, move, or assemble objects.
