Education

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Bachelor's degree - journalism, English, or communications
  • Master's or doctoral (Ph.D.) degree
  • You must have at least a bachelor's degree to be an editor. Book and magazine editors usually have a master's or doctoral (Ph.D.) degree.

    Hours

  • Work more than 40 hours per week
  • May work early in the morning or late in the evening
  • EDITORS will:
  • Work for publishing firms, magazines, or newspapers
  • Work with writers and other editors
  • Have strong writing, grammar, and organization skills
  • May work overtime to meet deadlines
  • EDITORS frequently:
  • Sit for long periods of time at a desk
  • Repeat the same movements
  • Use their hands to handle, control, or feel objects, tools, or controls
  • It is important that EDITORS be able to:
  • See details of objects that are less than a few feet away
  • Speak clearly so listeners can understand
  • Understand the speech of another person
