Most fashion designers learn their skills in formal training programs. Over 100 professional-technical schools and two- or four-year colleges offer programs in fashion design. You could also get a degree in art or fine art.

May be required to travel around the U.S. and overseas to production sites
FASHION DESIGNERS will:
Create sketches, patterns, and sample pieces
Often use computer-assisted design (CAD)
Work with clients, managers, and workroom staff

Stand or sit for long periods of time
Use hands to handle, control, or feel objects, tools, or controls
Repeat the same movements
It is important that FASHION DESIGNERS be able to:
See details of objects whether they are nearby or far away
Speak clearly so listeners can understand
Understand the speech of another person
See differences between colors, shades, and brightness
Use fingers to grasp, move, or assemble very small objects
